Review : "Although most of us here at Singletrack keep banging on about the benefits of wool for next-to-skin garments (and they are excellent if your going to get wet) I'd like to put in a word for this unglamorous but excellent garment from Vangard.

Its made from 100% polyester so although it will smell a bit by the end of a days ride its much cheaper than wool, does a better job of wicking sweat, does'nt get heavy with dampness, stays cooler when warm and dry, and i'm my opinion is comfier to wear as well - lovely close - fitted shape with no bunching or bulky hems, flat seams, zero itchiness ( although Merino wool does'nt itch as much as other wool, I can still feel a bit of an itch when I'm wearing it).

The vest is much underappreciated piece of clothing too. The vest can be paired with numerous types of garment over the top: under a mid layer and an outer jacket for cold and wet riding, or under a long sleeve looser jersey for nip-in-the-air riding.

Overall: Deeply unfashionable compared to Nu Skool Wool but I still think this manmade-material base layer is great.

Review : "Basically just a base layer with a windproof front, this simple shirt is still a useful performer.

Based on Vangards excellent ribbed MTS Elite base layer, it stretches well to stay close to the skin and maximise wicking. The windbreaker panel down the front stops you lungs and belly getting frozen on fast descents.

On its own, its great for slightly chilly days or hard working high heat great rides when cooler arms are actually a bonus.

It still works well under other layers, although you do get a bit more sweat up your front than a standard base.

You might find the sleeves a bit short if youre a gibbon, and it rustles a bit, but performance its great core warmer"

Verdict: Excellent base layer with beefed up anti-breeze freeze protection.

Review : "Padded underwear can come in handy if you need to ride any distance in civvies-maybe when commuting or going shopping. These shorts come with the additional benefit of the wind-stopping front panel, so they're also useful for wearing under your lycra for that extra bit of protection from the cold. The iinner fabric is a soft 'n' stretchy polyester that shifts sweat well and dries quickly, flat stitched throughout to avoid any rubbing as you pedal.

The seat pads a bit bulky in use but it certainly provides plenty of comfort"

Review : "Thin thermal liners (or socks) increase the warmth rating of your normal mittys by an improbable amount without much adverse effect on control. A pair of Vangards is certainly one of the cheapest ways to beat the chills"

Review : "A lot cheaper than most base layers , but you would'nt know from the excellent fast wicking performance. The ribbed fabric stretches easily, giving you plenty of skin contact and excellent mobility, and it comes in long, short andtall necked"

Review : "The best feature of this base layer is its ability to keep you dry, the fuzzy polyester fibres immediately moving the perspiration away from youre body even when youre working hard on the toughest climbs Its pretty warm too.

The cut  is skin-tight but the fabric is so soft and stretchy that its not at all restrictive.

With flatlock seams throughout, raglan sleeves, a high neck and the labels stitched to the outside, this is the most conmfortable top on test.

We also highly rate the version with a wind breaker front panel"
